Age Of War 2

Game Description: Age of War 2 is a mix of offense, defense, and a strategy game. The goal is to destroy the enemy base while defending yours. You can build turrets to defend your base, and build units to attack the enemy's. The twist of the game is that you can evolve to a more modern age as well, to unlock new units and defensive means. The more you evolve, the more powerful you will become!

How to Play Age Of War 2:

  • Age Of War 2 only requires you to use your left mouse button. You will not need to use your keyboard at anytime.
  • After the game fully loads, click the 'Play' button.
  • On the next screen, click the 'Start Game' button.
  • Choose your difficulty level: 'Easy', 'Medium', or 'Hard'.
  • There are three important parts in the game screen: the HUD, the Battlefield, and your Gold and Xp.
  • The HUD is at the top of the game screen and is always completely visible even when you change your view of the Battlefield.
  • The Battlefield is below the HUD and takes up the majority of the game screen. Here is where all the action takes place.
  • Your home base is on the left. The computer's home base is on the right. The Battlefield lies between both bases.
  • Your Gold and Xp are always visible at the lower right of the game screen.
  • You cannot see the entire Battlefield, nor can you see both home bases, at the same time. However, Age Of War 2 makes it easy to view what you want. As you move your mouse to the left or right your view changes accordingly.
  • The HUD is where you will find all of the game controls. The HUD is divided into 4 categories: Units, Turrets, Specials, and Upgrades. See Figure 1 below.

The HUD

Figure 1

  • You buy Units, Turrets, and Upgrades with your Gold.
  • You buy Specials with your Xp.
  • Units -- Units are your army. Your Units march left to right toward the computer's home base. The computer's Units march right to left toward your home base. Where the two armies meet is where the battle takes place. Move your mouse over a Unit to see a short description and to see how much Gold it costs. Click on a Unit to buy it. If you have enough Gold, the game will allow you to purchase the Unit and deduct that amount from your Gold total. You will see the Unit immediately come out of your home base (assuming your home base is in view). You may purchase as many Units as you need as long as you have enough Gold. At first, some Units may be locked. You can unlock these Units later with Upgrades.
  • Turrets -- Turrets help protect your home base. Think of them as guns that sit on towers. Move your mouse over the Turret icons to see a short description and to see how much gold it will cost. Before you buy a Turret you must first buy a tower to place it on. (The tower is the green icon in the Turrets section). You can build up to 4 towers. As you do, they will stack one on top of the other. When building a Turret, you will need to have a free tower. That is, one without a Turret. However, you can sell a Turret at half the price you paid for it and then replace it with a better one. Just click on the sell Turret button which is the last Turret icon located at the right (the red icon with the $ sign on it). Then, click on the Turret you want to sell. Sometimes you will need to click on your base to build or sell Turrets. (Go back to your base and click where it says 'Build.'). As with Units, you can only buy towers and Turrets if you have enough Gold.
  • Specials -- Specials let you do two things: Launch a special attack or evolve to a new age. You buy Specials with your Xp. Move your mouse over the Specials anytime, to see how much each will cost.
  • The game is divided into 7 ages: Caveman, Spartan, Egyptian, Medieval, Renaissance, Modern, and Futuristic.
  • Upgrades -- Upgrades are very important. You can upgrade your Units and make them more powerful. Be sure to spend some of your Gold on these. Most Upgrades can be upgraded up to three times: Level 1, 2, and 3. Move your mouse over each Upgrade to see what it does and how much Gold it will cost.
  • You automatically earn additional Gold and Xp through combat. Remember, your Gold and Xp are always displayed at the lower right corner of the screen.
  • As you are buying more Units to attack, towers and Turrets to defend, and Upgrading, and evolving, the computer will be doing the same.
  • Watch both your and the computers Base Health meter. Yours is on the left bottom corner of the screen. The computers is located at the lower right bottom. These Health meters indicate the health of each home base.
  • Whoever destroys the others home base first wins the game!
  • Click the 'Return' button to play again.

Age Of War 2 Game Options: All game options can be accessed by clicking the 'Options' button located at the lower left corner of the game screen. (I would recommend not changing the 'Quality', 'Frames per Second', or the 'Show Damage' options unless you are having a problem). The options are:
  • 'Quality' may be set to High, Medium, or Low.
  • 'Frames per Second' is set to 150 by default. This can be changed ranging from 25 to 300.
  • The 'Sound' can be set from 100% down to 0%
  • The 'Music' can be set from 100% down to 0%
  • The 'Show Damage' is set to OFF by default. Again, I would not recommend changing this to ON because there is a warning that says "Showing damage can cause lag." So, it is probably wise to just leave it OFF.

Age Of War 2 Playing Tips:
  • Start at the 'Easy' difficulity level until you learn the game. Then, play at the 'Normal' or 'Hard' levels as you gain experience.
  • Obviously, the first thing you will do is to buy some Units. Do this immediately as soon as the game begins. This way the first battle will take place near the middle of the battlefield and not at your front door. (The first time I played Age Of War 2 I didn't understand anything, or even know where the controls were located. About time I figured things out, the computer's Units were already attacking my base).
  • Don't go overboard in buying towers and Turrets. Yes, they are important. But remember, offense is just as important, and sometimes maybe even more important than defense.
  • One of my favorite Upgrades to buy is the Upgrade on the lower row, the first one on the left. This upgrade, named the Income Level, allows you to get more money from killed enemy Units. I try to upgrade this to the maximum 3 times allowed as soon as I can. This helps you earn more Gold quickly, allowing you to buy even more of the things you need.
  • Pay attention to the very first Upgrade, the first one on the left on the top row. On some ages you will need to click that Upgrade to unlock some of the Units. For instance, on the Caveman age this unlocks the Dino Hut Unit. (After you unlock it, you will still have to buy it from the Units area).
  • Here is the most important tip I can give you. Although the special attack is very powerful it costs a lot of Xp. You will be better off if you can save your Xp to evolve into the next age before the computer does. Evolving is very important! If you evolve before the computer, you have the advantage. If the computer evolves first, then the computer has the advantage. Think of it this way. If the computer has evolved into the Modern age and you are still at the Caveman age here is what is going to happen. You will be fighting with clubs and the computer will be fighting with tanks. Who do you think will win? (I would say this. Use your Xp for a special attack if it is your only way to save your home base and stay in the game. Otherwise, save your Xp to evolve).
  • Here is one final tip. Don't let my long review scare you away. I learned the game in about 20 minutes with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. In other words, I had to figure out everything for myself. I write these reviews to make things easier for my readers, but sometimes I wonder when the review is long if people assume the game is difficult to learn. A long review does not mean a game is hard to learn, it simply means there is a lot to explain. (Or, maybe I am just long-winded? Take your pick! lol.)

Richard's Rating: 5 out of 5.

Pro: Age of War 2 is absolutely incredible! It has fantastic graphics and sounds. The music is dynamic and powerful. The game is exciting and fun. What more could you want?

Con: The game has a big file and may load slow. Be patient. Believe me. It is definitely worth the wait!
