Bubble Town

Game Description: Save Borb Bay from disaster! Man the cannon to fire Borbs to match three or more in order to remove them from the board. Be careful where you aim because wasted shots clutter the board, and if the Borbs reach the yellow danger zone, the game is over. With two modes of play (Straight-Up and Ball), you’ll find challenge and excitement with every shot.

How to Play Bubble Town:

  • Select your mode of play by clicking either: 'Straight-Up Play' or 'Ball Play'. (Hint: Personally, I feel that 'Straight-Up Play' is the better of the two games. However, they are both excellent games).
  • Straight Up Play -- Line up the cannon to shoot the different Borbs to make three (or more) of a kind. Use the sides to make tricky bank shots to score extra points.
  • Ball Play -- Try to shot three or more matching Borbs using the cannon. However with every shot, the game board rotates, so pick your shots with care.
  • Powerups -- Collect powerups by freeing them from the game board. Powerups give your cannon different abilities, like firing super-accurate shots or firing shots that changes the color of Borbs. Use them wisely, and you can clear a lot of Borbs in one shot!
  • To shoot, first rotate the cannon with your mouse to aim. Then, left click to fire.
  • Take your time. There is no shot clock.
  • When you use up the Borbs in your TUBE, the Borbs get closer to the yellow DANGER ZONE.
  • Knock out all Borbs before any reach the DANGER ZONE to advance to the next level.
  • When a Borb hits the DANGER ZONE you lose.
  • If you lose a level, you may repeat the level until you win. However according to Domenic's comment, which you may read by scrolling down the page, after you win Bubble Town level 15 things change. He says once you win level 15, that each time you lose a level after that you must begin again back on level 15.
  • After some levels you may occasionally see a screen that says 'Bubble Town Deluxe.' The purpose of this screen is to entice you to download the deluxe version of the game. If you do not want to do any downloads, and want to continue to play the game here on Richard's Game Reviews, simply click the button where it says 'Just Let Me Play!' and immediately continue on to your next level.
  • As far as I can tell. there is no way to save your Bubble Town game progress. So unless you are willing to leave your computer on, and come back later, you will need to begin a new game back at level 1.

Bubble Town Game Options:
  • The game sounds can be turned on or off by clicking the 'Mute' button from the Menu. (To access the Menu, press your spacebar. Click 'Resume' to continue your game.)

Bubble Town Playing Tips:
  • Look at the next Borb in your TUBE. Knowing what the next Borb will be, can help you plan your current shot.
  • If you can make a match higher up, many times the Borbs below will also be knocked out. Learning this technique will allow you to knock out large numbers of Borbs with a single shot!
  • For the 'Straight Up Play' game learn the bank shot, where you bounce the Borb off of the left or right wall. Sometimes, the only way to get a Borb to its intended target is to use the bank shot. Besides that, bank shots also earn you extra points. This takes just a little practice. Of course, the more you practice the better you will get.
  • Learn to recognize the different powerups and what they can do.

Richard's Rating: 4 out of 5.

Comments: The most outstanding features of Bubble Town are the imaginative and unique sights and sounds. The game play is enhanced by the always interesting powerups. Just one shot, and you'll be hooked on this arcade-puzzler!

Please Note: Occasionally after the advertisement plays, you may see only a large dark rectangle. It may appear that the game has not loaded, when in fact it has. If this should occur, simply move your mouse pointer over the game area and the game will instantly appear.

  2. Hey Boots,

If I recall correctly, your original comment said something about one of the levels being extremely difficult to get through.

It is my fault that your comment got deleted and I apologize for that. Feel free to give your opinion about that again.

  3. Ah, thanks Richard. Yes, this game is extremely more-ish but, after about 50 attempts, still can't get through Level 12. I wonder if anyone has managed it.

  4. Hi Boots, glad to have you back! I thought I had lost you.

As far as Level 12 goes, I can't give you any personal experience about that. I don't recall how far I actually got in the game myself, because it has been quite a while since I last played Bubble Town, but I don't believe it was nearly that high. I think maybe I got to Level 8, or something like that.

However, I did do some brief research to try to find the answer to your question. I read more than 200 comments on some different game sites. The general consensus seemed to be that most players could not get past Level 10. That level seems to be the big stumbling block for almost everyone. So the fact that you can get past Level 10 puts you in rare company. However, one commentator did say that they got up to Level 13 a few times. So, it sounds like it is indeed possible to make it through Level 12. Another commentator claimed to have gotten up to Level 15. Which got me to wondering, once again. How many levels are there in Bubble Town? Does anyone know?

Anyway Boots, it certainly sounds like you are dedicated to this game. Be careful though. Many people find Bubble Town very addicting. If you do make it through Level 12, go ahead and post again. Even if you don't, your comments are always welcome.

  5. How do you actually get a jellyfishy bonus? I only ever get one or two and can't work out what I did to do it!

  6. Hi Maddie,

First of all, thanks for your question.

To be totally honest I have not played Bubble Town is quite a while. With over 300 games published here on Richard's Game Reviews, I simply cannot play all of them regularly. In any event, I know that I have never encountered any jellyfish in Bubble Town. So obviously you have progressed much farther in the game than I ever have. So, without any first-hand knowledge, I decided to try to do some internet research and here is what I have come up with. I found one source that says that you can make a jelly fish fall off the board by hitting it 3 times (but not by making it fall in a Big Drop). This will score 400 bonus points at the end of the level. If I am reading this correctly, what they are saying is this. If you hit the jelly fish 3 times it will fall off the board, and you will earn the bonus points. But if you make the jelly fish fall off in a Big Drop, you will not earn any bonus points. Anyway, that is my interpretation.

I hope this answers your question. Of course, we may be talking about two different things entirely as in apples and oranges. But hopefully, this was the information you wanted.

Also, I just wanted to add one more thing. I did pose the question earlier about how many levels were in the free version of Bubble Town (which is the version I have here on my site). According to this same source, the free version of Bubble Town, (both modes: Straight-Up Play, and Ball Play), have 15 levels.

  7. Hi Richard, I don't think that can be right because if you hit a jellyfish it changes into the hidden character and then you get rid of it in the usual way. Last try I got 3 and had several big drops, so maybe getting them off without changing them is the key. Any advice anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Maddie,

This is Richard again. Instead of paraphrasing my source, I am going to give you the exact quote. Here is what they said: "Jellyfishy - this jelly fish covers up a head so it will not match until you hit it with a cannon shot. It will reattach to another random head 2 or 3 times before falling off the board. Making a jelly fish fall off the board by hitting it 3 times (not by making it fall in a Big Drop) scores 400 at the end of the level bonuses."

So I think what they are probably saying is that even after the jellyfish changes you still must hit it directly again with the cannon each time until it falls off the board to get the bonus, but if you shoot any other head and make it fall off you would not get the bonus. Does this help, or make any sense to you? Of course, without any first-hand knowledge I am sort of working here in the dark, and I am not sure if this explanation is correct. Obviously I am not an expert on Bubble Town, or on any other game, and I don't pretend to be. I have to learn each game like just everyone else. But at least I am trying to help, right?

  10. Hi Richard,

When I first played Bubbletown here, the white "finger" cursor did not show on the game board during play. Now when I play, it is on the board and very distracting. That also happens when I play the game from another free play site. Is it something I've done?
    Thank you.
    Pam

  11. Hi Pam,

I am not exactly sure what you mean by the white "finger" cursor. Perhaps you are referring to the cursor when it is shaped like a hand? I always refer to this as the "hand" cursor myself. Maybe neither of us are calling it by its proper name? Anyway if that is what you mean, no I have never seen that during Bubbletown game play. So, without seeing this myself, I do not have any explanation for you. I cannot imagine it is anything you have done. Have you tried playing Bubbletown on a different computer? If you can use a different computer, does this still happen? If your answer is no it does not happen when you use a different computer, then the only thing I could suggest would be to perhaps change your mouse properties, although this seems to be somewhat of a bothersome solution just to play one game. Sorry, that is only suggestion I can think of.

Now, speaking of the mouse cursor and Bubbletown, I have noticed that if I move the mouse too much towards the very top of the game I will see the white "arrow" shaped cursor and the screen will go dim and not allow me to take my next shot. Personally, I always find that distracting even though it is my own fault for moving the mouse up too high. Also just to clarify things, as a game publisher, I cannot "fix" or "tweak" any of the games here on Richard's Game Reviews. Only the people who actually make the games can do that. The only thing I can do as a game publisher is to bring you the games as they are.

I hope Pam that you can figure out a solution to get rid of the "finger" or "hand" cursor, or whatever it is called. I can imagine how distracting that could be. Hopefully you can try my suggestion of using a different computer and see if that helps.

    Richard, from Richard's Game Reviews

  12. Hi Richard,
Yes, I was referring to the white hand with the pointing finger. It is actually the arrow, which should disappear on the game screen. Instead, it turns into the white hand with a pointing finger on the board. Now it is gone again! Boy oh boy, was that ever distracting! Thank you for answering so quickly. I hope it doesn't return.
    Regards,
    Pam

  13. I did a google search to find out how many levels bubble town has, and I see you said in an earlier comment it has 15. That is good news, I have gotten to level 14 several times so hopefully I can beat it soon. In regard to the jellyfish discussed in some earlier comments, if you notice, they start out with 3 dots on them. After they are hit once, they go down to 2 dots, hit them again and down to one dot, hit them again and they fall off. Its just a trick I noticed, you can look at them and see how many hits they need before they will fall off. Yes I play this game way too much.

  14. Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for your comment. As I also mentioned in one of my earlier comments, because I have not really progressed very far in Bubble Town myself, I have to rely on other people's knowledge. Thanks for your information about the Bubble Town jellyfish. I am sure it will help a lot of people.

By the way, I also did a google search to find out how many levels Bubble Town has, both because I was curious, and also because I wanted to give this information to my readers. My answer to that, of course, is based on the source I found, which, by the way, is here. If you click on this link, look inside the large box on the right side of the page. Notice that it says "Game length: 15 levels (in both modes)". Both modes, of course, refers to Straight-Up Play and Ball Play, which are the two ways to play Bubble Town.

To me, this looks like a very credible source, so that is how I came up with the 15 Bubble Town levels. That, and by reading hundreds of comments on other game sites. Of course, I cannot be 1000% sure that there are 15 levels in Bubble Town, but based on the knowledge that I have been able to gather, it sure looks like that is the case. Anyway Anonymous, if you ever do get to level 15, please do me and everyone else a huge favor and post another comment on this page and let everyone know for sure that level 15 in Bubble Town really does exist!

Of course, I know even in my limited Bubble Town experience that this is a very tough game, and it takes a lot of time and effort to get to the higher levels. For me personally, I never really did fall in love with the game enough to have the necessary patience, or to put in the time it takes to learn the game to get to the higher levels. But I know that there are thousands, upon thousands, of devoted Bubble Town fans that really love this game. Anyway Anonymous, if you or anyone else does get to Bubble Town level 15, please post a comment on this page and tell everyone about it.

  15. level 15 does indeed exist. I won 15 and went to 16, but when I lost 16 the game went back to 15. I played for 2 more days and actually got to level 17, but when I lost level 17 the game went back to level 15. So to go to higher levels you have to win the levels consecutively, which is VERY unlikely when you get to level 17. The levels stay at the level 15 difficulty.

  16. Hi Domenic,

Congratulations on getting to, and winning, Bubble Town level 15! That is quite a feat considering, as I understand it, that very few people ever make it beyond Bubble Town level 10. It is great to hear that Bubble Town 15 really does exist!

This is the first time that I have ever heard that there is a Bubble Town level 16 and a Bubble Town level 17. I really thought that level 15 was the last level.

It has been my understanding, at least from my personal experience, that when you lose any Bubble Town level the game ends and you begin again back at level 1. Of course, my own personal experience is only getting to about level 7. But, if I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like once you win Bubble Town Level 15, and lose any level after that, you begin again on level 15 and not on level 1.

Thanks so much for your comment, and for letting everyone know that Bubble Town level 15 is for real!

  17. Hi Richard,
When you lose any level of Bubble Town it lets you try the level again until you get past 15. You should try the game again - I am hooked on it.

  19. Hello Everybody,

This comment is in response to the previous two comments. Yes, you are absolutely correct Betty Borb, or is it Domenic? I am confused by your signature. So I am not sure who you are. I suppose it doesn't really matter. The important thing is that you know who you are! lol. By the way, I love your sense of humor. Anyway I took your advice and I played Bubble Town again, and you are correct. When you lose a Bubble Town level the game allows you to repeat a level until you win, at least it does on the lower levels where I am playing. Thanks for letting me know. I will make the necessary correction in my review. I do wonder if this was always the case, or if the game was changed somewhere along the way?

As far as your question goes, Anonymous, about playing Bubble Town level 5, which Bubble Town game are you playing? Are you playing the Straight-Up game, or the Ball Play game? It seems to me that most people probably play the Straight-Up game, so I will assume that is what your question is about. After I took Betty Borb's (a.k.a. Domenic's) advice and played Bubble Town again, I lost level 4. (And in case anyone is wondering, no this was not done on purpose). As she or he said, I was then able to repeat Bubble Town level 4 which I won on my second try. As far as level 5 goes, it seems to be only slightly more difficult than level 4 but not appreciably so. In fact, I was able to win level 5 on my first try. And believe me I am not very good at Bubble Town. For instance, I am still not very accurate with my shots. Obviously each level will grow a little more challenging as you progress through the game. But since you were able to win level 4, level 5 should not be that much harder. There really is not any special trick to winning level 5. It is pretty similar to level 4. Try reading my Bubble Town Playing Tips in my Bubble Town review above. Take special note of my last playing tip which says "Learn to recognize the different powerups and what they can do." To expand on this point a little further, when you see an unusual looking borb try hitting it. This will usually be a powerup that will help you win. Also, it seems to me that sometimes a second hit may be required to get some of the powerups. The Bubble Town powerups can help you wipe out large number of borbs at once and will dramatically increase your chances of winning. I have to say if you tried 200 times, I certainly admire your perseverance. I hope you are still having fun, and good luck with level 5.

  21. Hi Anonymous,

I am sorry to hear that you are still having a problem. Is this still about level 5? Which Bubble Town game are you playing? Are you playing the Straight-Up game, or the Ball Play game?

If you are playing the Straight-Up game, I don't know what else I can tell you other than what I mentioned in my previous comment. My only advice would be to keep trying if you are still having fun. On the other hand if you are getting frustrated, try taking a break from Bubble Town for a couple of days and try some of the other games here on Richrd's Game Reviews. I know that when I get frustrated with something, and I am just not talking only about games here but really about anything, if I get away from things for a while and then come back, very often I will find the solution on my very next try. Good luck!

  29. I've been to level 15 5 or 6 times. Yes, it's true that you can try a level unlimited times until you beat it to progress to the next level, but only until you reach level 15. Then you get one try to get to 16 and if you don't make it you go back to 15 again. VERY frustrating since it takes forever to win 15. It's addictive for sure.

  31. I have been to level 15 4 or 5 times too. It goes to 16 but every time you lose 16 you go back to 15 again. Once I got to 17 but lost it on the first try and went back to 15 again. Ugh, frustrating but fun. I wish there was a way to start up where you left off, although I've played so many times I can get to 10 in an hour or so. P.S. My tip to anon. who can't pass level 5, try to get the sides first. Then you can get some shots off the side edge at an angle, kind of like playing pool. Good luck!

  32. I have a question about the Powerups...the plunger says "Plunger!"; the wild says "Wild Borb!" and the hot one says "Hotfoot!"

What on EARTH does the sure shot powerup say?? My daughter claims it says "Sure Shot" (with a lisp), but I could swear I hear "Tequila's hot!" (which doesn't make sense.)

I keep learning little tricks but at level 49, there's pretty much no room at the bottom. Once the cannon reloads, that is often where I lose the game because the bottom row was already right at the yellow lines. Does anyone know if anyone has actually reached and won level 50?
