What's New? Page 1

What's New Pages Image
The main purpose of the What's New? pages is to tell you about any news, and any changes, here at Richard's Game Reviews. However, I also use these pages as sort of an online journal; and I sometimes talk about day-to-day things in my personal life too.

I don't post to these pages regularly, or follow any certain schedule. In fact, I have been known not to post here for weeks, and occasionally even for months at a time. As I said in my very first What's New? post, which appears directly below dated on September 25, 2010; I will post "as the spirit moves me." So, just check in here every once in a while to see if I have anything new to say.

I have created a new page for my site and, as you can see, I have named it What's New?. I won't be posting daily to the What's New? pages, but only occasionally "as the spirit moves me." Here, I will tell you about the changes I make to Richard's Game Reviews and maybe add a few personal touches. Nothing too personal, just life in general. Since I do not Twitter (at least not yet), I figure this is a good place to discuss things. So, let's get started.

Today was the hottest day in Los Angeles history... a scorching 113 degrees! I guess we were due for some heat after an unusally cool summer.

Monday, September 27, 2010

I finally noticed that about 4 of my games were down including the popular Jewel Quest game. I believe I have solved the problem and everything should be okay. This also gives me a chance to remind everyone that if you do notice that one of my games is down, or not working properly, I would appreciate it if you would send an email to me at richardsgamereviews@yahoo.com. With more than 160 games, it is too hard for me to monitor each game. It simply takes too much time. So, I would appreciate everyone's help!

Speaking of games being down, I had a teriffic new word game on my site named Word Sailing. The game worked fine for about 3 days and then it simply stopped working. Right now, I have not found a way to get it up and running. So unfortunately, for the time being, I had to remove Word Sailing from my site. But, I still would like to bring it back if possible.

I have installed a new 4 column footer on Richard's Game Reviews. I am really pleased with the way it turned out. (You will have to scroll all the way to the very bottom of the page to see it). In the first 3 columns you will see the 'Complete Game List' that has a link for every game I have here on Richard's Game Reviews. In the fourth column you will find a 'Categories' section. There, you will find all of the game categories I have here on Richard's Game Reviews. It was a lot of hard work, but well worth the effort.

Hi, this is Richard. Obviously this is an old post. I completely redesigned Richard's Game Reviews two times since this post was written. With my current design, which you are viewing now, I no longer use footer columns.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

BIG NEWS!!! I just added more than 30,000 games to Richard's Game Reviews! That is not a misprint. I really do mean thirty-thousand! How is this possible you may ask? All games are contained in one widget... the Heyzap game player. (You will have to scroll down to see it. You will find it on the left side of the page, just above my new footer). The great thing about this widget is that you can play any of the 30,000 games and still stay right here on Richard's Game Reviews. I feel this is a tremendous addition to my site... probably, the biggest change ever!

Hi, this is Richard once again. The Heyzap game player never caught on, and it is no longer here.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

I also want to mention one particular feature about the Heyzap game player. After you click 'Play Now' and the player opens up, click the 'New Game' button at the upper right corner. On the next screen that comes up look at the upper right corner again. You will see a search box. Use this search box to look for any type of game you like. For instance, if you are a Match 3 fan like I am, type the words 'match 3' (without the quotation marks) in the search box and the Heyzap player will come up will all kinds of great Match 3 games for you to play. If you like card games type the word 'cards' and it will produce a great selection of card games. Or, maybe you like word games. Then, just type the word 'word', and so forth. With so many games to play, using the search box feature is the best way to find the games you want.

Have you encountered a 503 error? I have. Yesterday, after I installed my new Heyzap game player, I played quite a few games to test it out. Everything worked fine. This morning when I opened up my site, in the space where the game player should have been it said "HTTP Error 503 - Service Unavailable." I did a little research and here is what I found out. A 503 error is usually only a temporary thing. It is usually caused by a server being overloaded. So, basically, what this means is that there were too many people playing games on the Heyzap network so the service was temporarily interrupted. Fortunately, for you and me, the solution is simple: refresh the page on your web browser. If that doesn't work the first time, try refreshing the page a second or even a third time. In my own experience after I refreshed the page everything went back to normal. However, a few minutes later, as I was going from game to game the 503 error reoccurred. I refreshed the page one more time and everything worked fine from that point on. So, remember, if the Bonus Games (Heyzap) widget shows a 503 error, just refresh your page.

Trick Hoops Challenge

Game Description: Challenge the toughest basketball players and defeat them on the street, at their own game.

How to Play Trick Hoops Challenge:
  • Click the 'Start Game' button.
  • After you watch the Demo click the 'Begin' button.
  • The first player you will challenge is Derek at The Bridge. Click the 'Continue' button to begin.
  • You get the first turn.
  • When you go first, you can either try to make a regular shot or try to make a trick shot.
  • If you try to make a regular shot you do not need to click any of the trick icons at the top.
  • If you try to make a trick shot you will have to CALL YOUR SHOT. Click on the trick icons in the order that you are going to perform them. For instance, if you were going to try to bounce the ball off the ground, hit the wall, and then do a bank shot off the backboard you would click: Floor, Wall, and Board. (Should you change your mind you may click on the 'Normal' icon. Clicking on the 'Normal' icon deletes the shot you were going to attempt. You may now try a regular shot. Or, you may click a different combination of trick icons).
  • Once you decide on your shot attempt, move your mouse to position the ball on the spot where you want to start your shot.
  • CLICK on the ball and PULL to set the direction and power of your shot. (Watch the red arrow as you PULL. The red arrow shows the direction and power).
  • RELEASE to shoot.
  • If you make the shot you called, your opponent is challenged. He/she must make the same shot or you get one point.
  • If you miss your shot, (or if you make your shot but it was not the shot you called), your opponent is not challenged and he/she begins their turn to go first.
  • Your opponent will now attempt to make their own shot.
  • If your opponent makes their shot attempt you are challenged and you must make the same shot or your opponent gets one point.
  • When either player goes first and makes the shot they called, that player gets to go first on the next round. If the player who goes first misses their shot or does not make the shot they called, then their opponent gets to go first on the next round.
  • The first player to score 3 points wins the match!
  • If you win, you get to challenge the next opponent.
  • If you lose, it's game over!

Trick Hoops Challenge Game Options:
  • To turn the music On or Off, hold down the control key (Ctrl) and press the letter 'M' on your keyboard. (Sometimes it can be difficult to get the music to turn On or Off. You may want to try holding down the control key and the letter 'M' a little longer than you normally would. That usually does the trick. If that doesn't work, you will need to adjust the speakers on your computer).
Trick Hoops Challenge Playing Tips:
  • When you go first and you are attempting a regular shot, that is, you have not clicked on any of the trick icons, you must only make a regular shot. Of course, you will have to either make a swish shot or a backboard shot in order for the ball to go in which is fine. But you cannot, for instance, bounce the ball off the ground or off the wall. Even if the ball goes in it would count as a miss because you did not CALL YOUR SHOT.
  • When your opponent goes first pay close attention to the red arrow. If your opponent scores, you must duplicate the same shot. Watching the red arrow for intensity and direction will help you do just that. (You must also read the description of your opponent's made shot at the top of the game. For instance, it may say Board. This would mean you would have to bounce the ball off of the backboard to complete the shot. A swish shot that goes in would count as a miss!)
  • Practice, Practice, Practice!
Richard's Rating: 4 out of 5.

Pro: Tricks Hoops Challenge has nice graphics and sounds. Each opponent you encounter has more basketball skills. This is one game, where the better you get, the more fun you will have!

Turn Maze

Game Description: Get the smiley face to drop into the black hole by turning the maze left or right.

How to Play Turn Maze:
  • Click the 'New Game' button.
  • Turn the maze left or right by clicking either of the two big arrows on the sides of the game screen. As you do, the entire maze will rotate in the direction of the arrow causing the smiley face to drop into a new position. You may also use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard if you prefer. (The up and down arrows on your keyboard will not work. That is, you cannot advance the smiley face with those arrows).
  • Your goal is to get the smiley face to drop into the black hole to advance to the next level.
  • You are given 100 seconds to complete each level. However, you actually have an unlimited amount of time because even after the 100 seconds are up, you may continue for as long as it takes. The time only affects how much you will score.
  • Should you get stuck, or if you just want to score more points, click the 'Reset' button located at the upper right corner of the game. This will bring the smiley face back to its original position and reset the time back to 100 seconds.
  • The faster you complete each level the higher you will score!
  • If you solve the level after the time goes down to zero you will lose 5 points. (You may click the 'Reset' button at anytime, even after the time goes down to zero, and still earn points).
  • There are 15 levels of play.
  • After you are finished playing, the game will not automatically reset. If you wish to play again you must click the refresh button on your web browser.

Turn Maze Playing Tips:
  • As will all maze games, you have to work "backwards." First, you have to find the spot from where you can drop the smiley face into the hole. Then, you have to figure out how you can get to that spot. Finally, continue working backwards until you figure out the entire path.
  • If you need to see the solution, here is the entire Turn Maze solution.

Richard's Rating: 3 out of 5.

Pro: Turn Maze has very clever graphics and sounds.

Con: Turn Maze is rather easy. If you want a more substantial challenge you may enjoy playing Tilt Maze.

  • If you miss any question from 11 to 14 your winnings drop back down to $32,000.
  • If you are able to answer all 15 questions correctly you win $1 MILLION!
  • The game ends when you miss a question, walk away, or when you win the $1 MILLION.
  • Please note: This game is played purely for entertainment. No money is actually won or lost.

The Who Wants To Win A Million Lifelines: Just like the real game show on TV you have three lifelines to help you along the way. You may use more than one lifeline on a single question, but each lifeline may only be used one time during the entire game. To use a lifeline, click on any of the three icons located at the top right of the game screen. Your lifelines are:
  • 50-50: This lifeline removes two of the wrong answers, leaving one more wrong answer and the correct answer.
  • Phone-A-Friend: Ask your friend the question. He or she will give you the answer and % of how sure they are.
  • Ask-The-Audience: Ask the audience for assistance. The results of the audience survey will be presented as a bar graph.

Richard's Rating: 3 out of 5.

Pro: With outstanding graphics and sound effects Who Wants To Win A Million provides a nice gaming experience.

Con: The questions for Who Wants To Win A Million are definitely a lot easier than the original Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. With the original game I have never even been close to the $1 MILLION question. (That is precisely the reason why I like the original so much... because it is so challenging). With Who Wants To Win A Million I was able to win the $1 MILLION on only my second or third try. Also, the original Millionaire game has 1,470 questions. I do not know how many questions are in Who Wants To Win A Million. I only played the game for about ten to fifteen minutes, and in that brief amount of time I encountered many repeat questions. So, I am fairly sure there are considerably less. More Games: If you like Who Wants To Win A Million you may also like to play the original Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

  • You have 30 seconds to answer the first 5 questions, and 45 seconds for the remaining questions.
  • If you miss any of the first 5 questions your winnings are $0.
  • If you get to question 5 and answer that question correctly you are guaranteed to win at least $5,000.
  • Anytime, after you hit the $5,000 mark, should you be stumped you may walk away and take the money. Click the letter 'w' on your keyboard to walk away.
  • If you miss any question from 6 to 9 your winnings drop back down to $5,000.
  • If you get to question 10 and answer that question correctly you are guaranteed to win at least $100,000.
  • If you miss any question from 11 to 14 your winnings drop back down to $100,000.
  • If you are able to answer all 15 questions correctly you win $10 MILLION!
  • The game ends when you miss a question, walk away, or when you win the $10 MILLION.
  • Please note: This game is played strictly for entertainment. No money is actually won or lost.

Super Generic Quiz Game Lifelines: Just like the real game show on TV you have lifelines to help you along the way. You may use more than one lifeline on a single question, but each lifeline may only be used one time during the entire game. To use a lifeline, click on any of the lifeline icons, or click 1 for Half-It, 2 for Poll Some Folks, 3 for Call A Buddy, 4 for The Professor, or 5 for BounceBack. Your lifelines are:
  • Half-It: Half-It takes away two wrong answers, leaving one wrong answer and the correct one.
  • Poll Some Folks: Poll Some Folks gets the opinion of our audience about the question and puts it in a bar graph.
  • Call A Buddy: Call A Buddy sponsered by T-Mobile calls up one of our friends and sees what they think.
  • After the $100,000 mark you get two additional lifelines. They are:
  • Call The Professor: Ask The Professor for help.
  • BounceBack: BounceBack lets you take two guesses at the question, but you can't walk away.

Richard's Rating: 3 out of 5.

Pro: Super Generic Quiz Game really is super is some respects. The graphics and sounds are top-notch. Adding voices to the Call A Buddy and The Professor lifelines is also a nice twist.

Con: It's really a shame there are not more questions. With only 141 questions, you are bound to get many repeats. Because of so many repeat questions, I found myself getting bored after playing the game only a few times.

More Games: If you like Super Generic Quiz Game you may also like to play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire which has about 10 times the number of questions.

Crystal Golf Solitaire

Game Description: Click the cards that are one above or below the Home card and try to clear the entire Field before the deck runs out!

How to Play Crystal Golf Solitaire:
  • Click the 'Play' button.
  • Select from 3 difficulity levels: Casual (Aces can be High or Low), Regular (Aces are Low), Expert (Aces are Low. Cards are hidden).
  • Crystal Golf Solitaire is played with a standard 52 card deck, plus 4 jokers.
  • Each round begins with 35 cards dealt to the Field (at the top), 20 cards dealt face down to form the deck, and 1 card is dealt face up immediately to the right of the deck (the Home card).
  • The 35 Field cards are dealt to 7 columns. Each column has 5 cards that overlap each other. (For both the Casual and Regular levels all Field cards are dealt face up. For the Expert Level only the top card in each column may be seen. The remaining cards underneath are dealt face down).
  • The goal of Crystal Golf Solitaire is to move all 35 Field cards unto the Home pile before the deck runs out.
  • Only the bottom card of each Field column (that is, the card that is not overlapped by another card) may be moved.
  • A card may be moved from the Field unto the Home pile when it is one card higher or lower. For example if the Home card pile shows a 6, any uncovered 5 or 7 may be moved from the Field unto the Home pile regardless of suit.
  • Click on a card to move it from the Field to the Home pile. (The card will automatically move as long as it is eligible to do so.) Now, the card that you just moved becomes the top card in the Home pile, and you continue building on that card.
  • Build sequences until the Field is clear. For instance: 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 5, 6, 7... The order can be ascending, descending or both.
  • If you are playing the Casual Level you may also build Kings on Aces, and Aces on Kings. For instance: K, A, 2, 3, 2, A, K, Q. (For both the Regular and Expert levels Aces are Low. So, they may only be built on a two, but not on a King).
  • When no play is available from the Field, click on the deck. Upon your click, the top card from the deck will turn face up on the Home pile. You now build on that card.
  • Jokers are wildcards! A joker may be moved to the Home pile at any time. Once a joker is on the Home pile any uncovered card from the Field may be moved unto the joker.
  • The bigger you build a sequence, the higher you’ll score.
  • Receive a bonus of 100 points for each remaining card in the deck when you successfully complete a round.
  • A Speed Bonus may be earned. Watch the bonus timer at the top. If you successfully complete the round before the time gets down to zero you will earn those points as a bonus.
  • You may use the 'Undo' button a total of up to 15 times in a row. Each time you click 'Undo' you lose points.
  • If you get stuck you may click the 'Hint' button and Crystal Golf Solitaire will show you a possible move.
  • If you are able to clear all cards from the Field before the deck runs out of cards you win, and you go to the next round.
  • Should you fail to remove all cards from the Field you lose, and the game ends.

Crystal Golf Solitaire Game Options:
  • The music may be turned on or off by clicking the musical note icon located at the upper right corner of the game screen.
  • The sound effects may be turned on or off by clicking the sound effect icon located immediately to the left of the musical note icon.

Crystal Golf Solitaire Playing Tips:
  • Obviously, the order in which you move cards makes all the difference. Try to set things up so you can build longer sequences. For instance, suppose you have a choice of two different sevens you can move. Let's also suppose you already have an uncoverd Jack and an uncovered nine. If one of the sevens would reveal a two when you move it but the other seven would reveal a ten, it probably makes more sense to uncover the seven with the ten directly underneath it because you now have set up a possible sequence of 9, 10, J.
  • If you have a choice of cards to play and one card has other cards underneath it, and the other card does not, always select the card that does. This allows more cards to be put in play and increases your chances of being able to make a move.
  • Use the 'Undo' button as much as you need. It is better to lose a few points and still be able to go on to the next round rather than losing the game.

Richard's Rating: 4 out of 5.

Comments: Crystal Golf Solitaire is easy enough to win, but still is challenging enough to be fun. The cards are large, and easy to read, which I always appreciate in a card game. The graphics and sounds add a lot of pizzazz. Overall, it a delightful game!

Richard's Rating: 3 out of 5.

Ghost

Game Description: Match wits with a ghost in this absurd and hilarious word game. Can you help free a ghost named Boo, trapped in this world? Or, will you fail and become a ghost yourself?

How to Play Ghost:
  • Once the game fully loads, and you may need to watch an advertisement or two first, select your difficulty level. Choose from Easy, Normal, or Hard. (You can change your difficulty at any time by clicking on the brain located near the lower right corner of the game screen).
  • After you select your difficulty level, Boo will explain how to play the game. Just keep pressing your space bar to go through these instructions, one at a time, until the game finally begins.
  • The goal of this simple game is to never be the one to a complete word.
  • Made-up words, proper nouns, and names do not count.
  • Words must be at least 4 letters long to count.
  • Boo always picks the first letter. After that, the two of you alternate turns until someone completes a spelled word.
  • You will use your keyboard to select your letter. Simply type the letter you choose.
  • When Boo completes a word, he loses a letter from the word Ghost.
  • If Boo loses all of his Ghost letters, you win the game, and Boo can get his wings and can pass on to the great beyond!
  • When you complete a word, you get a tombstone with a letter.
  • If your tombstones ever spell out GHOST, you lose the game and you become a ghost yourself!

Ghost Game Options:
  • To turn the game sounds off or on click the microphone icon located at the lower right corner of the game.

Ghost Playing Tips:
  • The ghost always selects the first letter. You select the second letter. After that, you alternate turns. So, the ghost selects all odd number of letters: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and so forth. You select all even number of letters: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and so forth.
  • The strategy is obvious. You want to try to force the ghost, through your clever choice of letters, to complete a word that has an odd number of letters such as 5, 7, 9, 11 and so forth. At the same time, the ghost will try to make you compete a word, through his own clever choice of letters, that has an even number of letters such as 4, 6, 8, 10 and so forth. (Remember, words with less than 4 letters do not count).
  • Let's look at an example where the ghost forces you to complete a 6 letter word. Suppose the first four letters put up by you and the ghost are SQUI. The ghost selects the fifth letter. Let's suppose the ghost chooses the letter 'N' as the fifth letter. This gives us SQUIN. The only possible letter you can chose in this instance is the letter 'T' which completes the 6 letter word SQUINT.
  • Now let's look at another example where this time you force the ghost to complete a 5 letter word. Suppose the first three letters put up by you and the ghost are the letters DRA. You select the fourth letter. You select the letter 'K' as the fourth letter. This gives us DRAK. The ghost has no other choice except to select the letter 'E' as the fifth letter which completes the 5 letter word DRAKE which, by the way, means a male duck.
  • There is a special rule for the game that both you and the ghost must follow. Each of you must always select a letter that either completes a word or select a letter that allows a word to be completed later. The ghost will automatically follow this rule. You must too, or else you will get a bloody red 'X'. Let's go back to the first example. Remember we said the first 5 letters were SQUIN and I stated that the only possible letter you can choose in this instance is the letter 'T'. The reason you must choose the letter 'T' is because of this special rule. If you selected any letter other than a 'T' you would get a red 'X'. For example, suppose you select the letter 'F' as the sixth letter. This gives us the letters SQUINF. There is no such word as SQUINF nor does any other word begin with the letters SQUINF, hence the red 'X'. If you get three bloody red 'X's in a row you automaticaly lose the word and you get another letter on your tombstone. (If you do get 3 'X's in a row watch the screen carefully. The ghost will show you the word it was thinking of. But, you have to pay close attention because it flashes this information rather quickly).
  • Try not to get fixated on one particular word. Remain flexible. You may be thinking of one certain word that you want the ghost to spell, but the ghost is also thinking of a certain word or words it wants to force you to spell. So, when the ghost selects a letter unexpectedly you have to think of a different word to force the ghost to spell... a sort of cat and mouse game.
  • Be careful not to accidently spell an unintended word. For instance, suppose the first 3 letters selected are NAV. You select the fourth letter. You may be thinking great. If I select the letter 'E' as the fourth letter the ghost will have no other choice other than to select the letter 'L' to complete the 5 letter word of NAVEL. The only problem is this. As soon as you type 'E' as the fourth letter this gives the letters NAVE. And, guess what? NAVE is a completed 4 letter word that undoubtedly did not occur to you. (By the way in case you are curious, a nave is the central part of a church running lengthwise). So, as soon as you type that 'E' you lose, because you were the first to compete a word.
  • Ghost is not that difficult to win. In fact, I would venture to guess that most people would win a majority of the time if they play at the Easy level, or even at the more difficult levels. Don't even think about using a dictionary, or any other type of word reference, when playing unless you want to totally spoil your fun. And, why in the world would you want to do that? It is fun to match wits with the ghost and come up with the words all on your own.
  • For more advanced play, and a tougher opponent, try the Normal or Hard difficulty levels.

Richard's Rating: 3 out of 5.

Comments: Ghost is a quick, and I think, quite entertaining game. The graphics and music are extremely cute and clever. In fact, the game is so cute I think most people, including myself, probably underestimate how good the actual game really is. It really is fun to match wits with the ghost, especially on the Hard level. I want to make one further point. I played this game quite a bit for my review and I would have to say that Ghost, unlike a lot of other word games, does not come up with a lot of oddball words that are questionable. On the contrary, it is rather good at not doing that. I am not suggesting that you will agree completely with all of it's decisions about which words are acceptable, but I think the game is very fair in this regard.

Battlegemz

Game Description: Play an exciting match 3 game against a human opponent in real-time! Collect gems and try to defeat your opponent through the clever use of your spells and gems. Battlegemz is a mix of gems, strategy and roleplay elements.

Before you begin to play Battlegemz, I suggest that you read my entire review. That way, you will have at least some idea of how to play the game.

How to Play Battlegemz:
  • The Lobby usually loads first, and so it will probably be the first thing you will see. You will probably also see a message that says 'Connecting to the server' near the middle of the screen. At the right, you will see a list of players in the Lobby. These are people who are either already playing Battlegemz, or are waiting to play. There are two types of players in the Lobby: registered users and guests. Registered users can give themselves a user name and win points when they win a game. Guests are assigned a random number and do not win points. You will play as a guest.
  • Once the game loads, click the 'Start Game' button.
  • You may see a message that says 'Waiting for an opponent'. Warning: Battlegemz is not on a popular server. This means, quite often, you may have some difficulty finding an online opponent. I suggest that if you do not find an opponent within two to three minutes, that you may want to consider playing another Multiplayer game here on Richard's Game Reviews, and then try again a little later. Bubblez is a good choice. It is on a very popular server and usually has lots of people ready to play.
  • Okay. Assuming that you were fortunate enough to find an opponent, here is how you play Battlegemz. The first thing you may want to do, if you have difficulity seeing the board, is to increase the zoom level on your computer to say 125%, or 150%, or to whatever size you need that lets you feel comfortable.
  • At the beginning of a game, both you and your opponent will each have 30 health points and 15 shield points. See Figure 1 below.

Battlegemz Figure 1
Figure 1

  • The best way for me to explain Battlegemz is to use an actual example. For the rest of these 'How to Play' instructions please refer to Figure 2 below. Figure 2 is a game I played (and eventually lost). Let's examine Figure 2 more closely.
  • Your game progress is always shown on the left side of the game. So, in Figure 2, you can see I was guest_128898 and my game progress is on the left. Your opponent's game progress is always shown on the right side.
  • You and your opponent play on the same board.
  • You and your opponent take turns playing. Battlegemz will always tell you whose turn it is at the top of the screen. As you can see in Figure 2, Battlegemz was telling me 'It is your turn!' So, it was my turn to make the next move. If it had been my opponent's turn, Battlegemz would have flashed the message: 'It is your opponent's turn!'
  • Each player has 30 seconds to make their move. The clock, shown at the bottom of the screen, will count down the time from 30 to zero. If you do not make a move within 30 seconds you lose your turn. As you can see in Figure 2, at the time I captured this screenshot, I had 28 seconds left to make my move.
  • There are two kinds of moves that a player may make when it is his turn. A player may collect gems by matching 3 or more gems of the same color on the board, or a player may use one of his spells (weapons) to either strengthen himself or to weaken his opponent. (Remember, when it is your turn, you can either collect gems from the board or use one of your weapons... but, you cannot do both in the same turn).
  • There are 5 different colors of gems to collect. They are: blue, green, yellow, purple, and red. There are also black skulls (more about these later).
  • To collect gems from the board, you must make a match of 3 or more in-a-row of the same color. To make a match, you must swap the positions of two gems that are next to each other either horizontally or vertically. To swap the two gems you click on them one at a time with your mouse. The gems will only swap positions if there is a resulting match of 3 or more in-a-row. If you made a mistake, and there is not a match of at least 3 gems, you may try again as long as you still have time remaining on your 30 seconds.
  • As you and your opponent collect gems, the gems each of you collect are displayed on the screen for both of you to see. Let's refer once again to Figure 2. Let's examine the gems that both I, and my opponent, have collected so far. Remember, each time you play, your stats are on the left. The opponent's stats are on the right. So, my stats are on the left. I have, up to this point, collected the following gems: Blue 25, Green 16, Yellow 18, Purple 13, and Red 21. My opponent has collected the following: Blue 22, Green 17, Yellow 21, Purple 21, and Red 18. Why this information is important I will explain in a bit.
  • You are only allowed to collect a maximum of 50 gems in each color.
  • Now, lets take a look at the spells (weapons). There are five types of weapons: Fireball, Thunder, Earthquake, Healing, and Shielding.
  • Three types of weapons are offensive: Fireball, Thunder, and Earthquake. You use these weapons to attack and weaken your opponent. Your opponent can do the same to you.
  • Two types of weapons are defensive: Healing, and Shielding. You use these weapons to strengthen yourself. Your opponent can do the same for himself.

Battlegemz Figure 2
Figure 2

  • You can only use a weapon if you have collected enough gems of each color. Lets refer again back to Figure 2. Notice that on my side of the game (the left side) all of my weapons are lit up. This means I currently have enough gems collected to use any of my weapons. Now, look at my opponent's side (the right side). My opponent has all of his weapons lit up, except for one. Did you notice that my opponent's Earthquake weapon is not lit up? It is dim. Let me explain why that is. On each weapon type you will see colored gems with a number underneath it. These numbers tell you the minimum amounts you must have collected of each color in order for the weapon to be lit up, and ready to use. In order to use the Earthquake weapon you must have collected a minimum at least 5 purple gems. (My opponent has 21, so he has more than enough purple). 5 blue. (My opponent has 22 blue which is way more than he needs). 12 yellow. (My opponent has 21 yellow. Again, much more than he needs). 12 green (My opponent has 17 green. He is fine there too). And 20 red. (Oop's! My opponent does not have enough red gems collected. He has 18 and is 2 short). Only because my opponent is lacking in one color... red, his earthquake weapon is dim and cannot, at the moment be used. As soon as he makes one more match of red gems (remember the minimum match is 3 in-a-row), he will have his Earthquake weapon and I am in big trouble!
  • When you use a weapon, you reduce the amount of gems you have collected. Remember those little numbers underneath each colored gem for each weapon we talked about above. Those are the same amounts each color will be reduced when you use each weapon. Let me give you an example. Refer to Figure 2. Let's look back again on my side of the board (the left side) and consider my Fireball weapon. What would happen if I used my Fireball weapon on my current turn? Well, first I should tell you my opponent would lose 6 points. But, that is not the part I am talking about here. I want you to understand what would happen to the gems on my side of the board. A Fireball weapon costs 6 red and 5 green gems. So, if I used a Fireball my red gems would decrease to 15 (21 - 6) and my green gems would decrease to 11 (16 - 5). See how it works? Now, let's discuss each individual weapon and see what it can do.
  • Fireball... A Fireball takes 6 points away from your opponent.
  • Thunder... Thunder takes 12 points away from your opponent.
  • Earthquake... Earthquake takes a whopping 30 points from your opponent!
  • Healing... Healing adds 10 points to your Health. Your Health points cannot go beyond 50.
  • Shielding... Shielding adds 10 points to your Shield. Your Shield points cannot go beyond 50.
  • Besides your weapons there is one more way to do damage to your opponent. Did you notice the black skulls on the playing board in Figure 2? If you match 3 black skulls in-a-row you take 3 points from opponent. Match 4 black skulls in-a-row and you take 4 points from your opponent. And so forth.
  • You win, if your opponent loses all of his health and shield points! If you lose all of your points first, your opponent wins.
  • When the game ends, you can replay the same opponent if you both are willing. Or, if you, or your opponent leaves, you can search for a different opponent to play.

Battlegemz Game Options:
  • The music may be turned on or off by clicking the musical note icon located near the lower right corner of the game.
  • The game sounds may be turned on or off by clicking the microphone icon also located near the lower right corner.

Battlegemz Playing Tips:
  • Knowing when you should use a specific weapon is undoubtedly the most important part of Battlegemz. This takes practice.
  • Analyze the board. To do this you have to pay very close attention to not only your numbers, but also to your opponents numbers. What weapons do you have available? What weapons does your opponent have available? How close are you to getting a weapon you need? How close is your opponent to getting a weapon they need?
  • Do not use your Healing weapon if you are already near the 50 point Health limit. This would just be wasting your gems.
  • The same thing applies to your Shielding weapon. Do not use your Shielding weapon if you are near the 50 point Shield limit.
  • Remember, you are only allowed to collect a maximum of 50 gems in each color. So, for instance if you already have the maximum number of 50 red gems collected it does no good to match more red gems.
  • When you attack your opponent you cause your opponent to lose points, but you do not cause your opponent to lose any of the gems they have collected.
  • Know when you should go on defense or offense. If you have 30 points or less and your opponent gains access to their Earthquake weapon... guess what? As soon as they click that Earthquake weapon... it's game over! If your points are getting dangerously low (30 or below), and you don't see any quick way you can knock out your opponent, then you probably need to use your Healing or Shielding weapons because these will add points to either your Health or Shield. The question becomes, can you gain access to either your Healing or Shielding weapons before your opponent gets his hands on that Earthquake weapon? How would do you do this? Let's refer to Figure 2 once more. Notice that there are no red or yellow gems needed for Healing or Shielding. So, to gain access to your Healing or Shielding weapons you would want to make matches of purple, blue, and green. Now, lets take the reverse situation. Suppose your opponent is dangerously low on his points (30 points or less) and maybe you are okay with your own points, lets say at least you have more than 30 points. The question now becomes can you gain access to your Earthquake weapon before your opponent can gain access to either his Healing or Shielding weapon and replenish his points? How would do you do this? Let's refer to Figure 2 one more time. Reds and Yellows are the primary colors you need to collect for offensive weapons. You will need some green too. You may need just a little purple or blue.
  • Collect lots of green gems. Green gems are the only color you need for every weapon. So, having an abundance of green gems is always good.
  • Making matches near the bottom of the board can be good strategy. This allows more gems to fall and can sometimes result in making many matches, causing a chain-reaction.
  • Be prepared to lose! There are a lot of experienced players who know the game exceedingly well. When you are first starting out, unless you happen to get matched with an inexperienced player, be prepared to get soundly beaten again and again. I have played the game for about a total of 2 hours. I can already tell by the first or second move how experienced my opponent is. I also just played an opponent you had 575 points. Right there, that tells you they have played... and won, a lot of Battlegemz games. Don't be intimidated or get discouraged. At this point I usually lose. But, I have won some games too. Just get in there and play.

Richard's Rating: 5 out of 5.

Pro: Battlegemz is an exciting game of Match 3, strategy, and roleplaying all wrapped up in one fantastic package! It is a brilliant game!

Con: It does take quite a bit of practice before you can start winning. As I mentioned before, there are a lot of experienced Battlegemz players just waiting to pounce on a newbie. Don't let this discourage you. Just keep playing. This game is well worth learning and mastering.

Bloons Tower Defense 4

Well I guess I must have been living in a cave for the past couple of years! Of course, I had heard of Bloons Tower Defense, but I never actually played it until yesterday. This review is for my fellow cave dwellers. That is, it is for anyone who has never played Bloons Tower. If you have played before you undoubtedly know much more about Bloons Tower Defense at this point than I do. So, just start playing. If you have never played the game before, or if you need a quick refresher, keep reading. I will try to explain the basic premise of Bloons Tower Defense and how to get started. The rest, you can pick up as you go along.

Game Description: Try to place your towers in strategic places to stop all the bloons before they reach the end of the track and escape.

How to Play Bloons Tower Defense 4:
  • Click the 'New Game' button to begin a new game.
  • Select a track. There are 6 different tracks to play. For the purposes of this review, since I am an absolute beginner, I will select the 'Beginner' track. (There are also Premium Tracks and Premium Upgrades that you can buy with MochiCoins. MochiCoins cost real money. Since this website is only about free games, that will not be part of my review).
  • Set your game mode. Each track has 3 game modes that you may select: Easy, Medium, or Hard. On Easy, stuff is quite cheap to buy and you have 200 lives. There are 50 rounds to pass. On Medium, stuff is fairly priced and you have 150 lives. There are 60 rounds to pass. On Hard, stuff is expensive and you only have 100 lives, and you have to pass 75 gruelling rounds. For the purposes of this review I will select the 'Easy' mode.
  • The game screen. Okay, if you are following along with me you have first selected the 'Beginner' track and then the 'Easy' mode. Now, let's discuss what you see on the game screen. Obviously, there is a track. But what else? See the money at the top right corner. This is the current amount of money you can spend to buy towers. Right below the money is a red heart. The number immediately to the right of the red heart shows you how many lives you have remaining. In this case, 200. Below the heart you will see 16 different towers. (By the way, before I go any further, I should explain what a "tower" is because that was one of the things that confused me the first time I played. A tower is simply a weapon that you use to help you destroy bloons. More about towers later.) If this is your very first time playing, you will only see one tower you can use... the Dart Monkey. For the rest of the towers you will see a greyed out square with a question mark because these towers have yet to be unlocked. Go ahead and rest your mouse pointer over the Dart Monkey. Now, look at the bottom of the game screen. Bloons Tower Defense 4 explains what this tower... the Dart Monkey, does; and shows you it costs $170.
  • There is one other thing I want to mention before you play Round 1. If you look at the very bottom of the game screen you will see something named 'My Career Rank'. Yesterday, before I had ever played I believe my career rank was 1. Today it says 11. It seems as you play more Bloons Tower Defense 4 your career rank increases. Why is this important? Apparently, from what I can tell, as your rank increases it unlocks new types of towers to buy. Yesterday when I played Round 1, since I only had a career rank of 1, there was only 1 type of tower I could buy... the Dart Monkey. Today, I have a career rank of 11 and I have 11 types of towers available to purchase in Round 1.
  • Let's buy your first tower! Grab a tower with your mouse and drag it somewhere near the track. Click it to set its position. Sometimes a second click is necessary to release it from your mouse (this second click, if needed, should be anywhere outside of the tower's lighted circle but near the track area.) If this is your very first time playing you only have the Dart Monkey. Drag the Dart Monkey somewhere near the track. As you do, you will see a circle. This is the radius of how far your Dart Monkey can shoot its arrows. Like most towers, a Dart Monkey cannot be placed directly on the track. It also cannot be placed in the water. So, pick a spot on the yellow dirt. A good spot might be right below the first section of track as it comes down from the top. Then, click your Dart Monkey to set its positon. That is the spot where your Dart Monkey will operate from. (Although I have no verification of this, remember I am a beginner too, I believe that once you put a tower in postion it cannot be moved to another location.) Now, only if you have difficulity releasing it from your mouse, click one more time outside of the tower's lighted circle but in the general vicinity of the track area. Did you notice one more thing? Your money decreased by $170 because you just purchased the Dart Monkey!
  • Let's play round 1! Click the 'Start Round!' button and watch the action. (Anytime you want to speed up the action click and hold down the 'Fast Forward' button. I don't believe the 'Fast Forward' button changes the results. I believe it only speed things up. You may go back and forth between regular speed and fast forward at any time.)
  • Your Dart Monkey should have easily popped all of the balloons in Round 1. And, did you notice you earned more money?
  • This concludes my brief getting started tutorial for Bloons Tower Defense 4. Have fun! And don't forget to come back to Richard's Game Reviews and play again!

Bloons Tower Defense 4 Game Options:
  • The music may be turned on or off by clicking the musical note icon located at the lower right bottom of the game screen. It is somewhat small, so look carefully.
  • The game sounds may be turned on or off by clicking the microphone icon also located at the lower right bottom of the game screen.

More About Bloons Tower Defense 4:
  • Most towers cannot be placed directly on the track. Other towers, like Road Spikes. can only be placed on the track. As each new tower is introduced into the game Bloons Tower Defense 4 does an excellent job of explaining what each tower does and how you can use it most effectively. Also, remember, as you place your mouse over each available tower on the right side of the game screen Bloons Tower Defense 4 will display detailed information about the tower at the bottom of the game.
  • You are not limited to only one of each type of tower. As long as you have enough money you can purchase as many of each tower type as you wish.
  • There really is no one right way to place the towers. Try different towers in different postions and just have fun!
  • Not all bloons are created equal. Red bloons are the slowest. Blue bloons move a little bit faster. A green bloon moves a little faster than a blue bloon and so forth. Some bloons are immune to certain towers. Not only that. Some bloons have other bloons inside them and when they pop the other bloon is released. And that bloon may have still another bloon inside that one and so forth. This is significant for two reasons. It makes the bloons more numerous and harder to destroy. And, if a bloon that has many bloons inside it gets all the way to the end of the track and escapes, you can lose many lives at once. For instance, if a single black or a white bloon escapes, you lose 11 lives!

Richard's Rating: 5 out of 5.

Comments: Bloons Tower Defense 4 is an absolutely superb game! It is simply tremendous fun!

Fruits Vegetables Picture Matching

Game Description: Try to clear the entire board before time runs out by matching identical pictures.

How to Play Fruits Vegetables Picture Matching:
  • Click on a picture of a fruit or vegetable. Then, click on its identical pair.
  • If there is a clear path between the matching pictures, Fruits Vegetables Picture Matching will grow a vine connecting the two pictures and they will be removed from the board.
  • If there is no clear path between the two matching pictures, the pictures will not be removed. You will first have to remove other pictures that are blocking the way. Then, try again.
  • Your goal is to remove all pictures from the board before time runs out to advance to the next level.
  • The time is shown at the bottom of the game. It starts at 100 and counts down to zero. The time remaining is also depicted by the blue bar at the bottom which moves right to left.
  • You begin the game with 3 lives. (Your lives are displayed at the top of the game and are signified by the number just to the right of the red heart and the green X).
  • Earn time you successfully complete a level you gain 1 extra life.
  • You may reshuffle the pieces by clicking the shuffle button but this will cost you 2 lives. (The shuffle button is the icon just to the left of the red heart at the top of the game. Fruits Vegetables Picture Matching Game Options:
  • To turn the music on or off, click the green microphone icon located just below the upper right corner of the game screen.

Fruits Vegetables Picture Matching Playing Tips:
  • Look for matches along the outside borders. Any 2 identical pictures that are on the same border can usually be matched. For instance, if both pictures are on either the top, right side, bottom, or left side border they can usually be matched. It is also usually possible to match identical pictures when they are on adjacent borders. In other words, you can usually match around one corner, but not two. This means a picture that is on the top or bottom border can usually be matched if its identical pair is on one of the side borders. However, if one picture is on the top border and its pair is on the bottom border it probably cannot be matched because you would have to go around two corners. (Later when you remove enough pictures from the interior you can, of course, make a direct connection). The same thing would apply to two identical pictures should one be located on the left border and its pair located on the right border.
  • Sometimes, you have to work from the interior. As you make matches in the interior you must try to create enough matches to create a hole in the interior. As the hole becomes larger, more matches become possible.
  • Any 2 identical pictures that are side-by-side (either horizontally or vertically) may be matched.
  • Never use the magnifying glass icon. Simply showing you a match is not worth losing a life.
  • In certain situations using the shuffle button can be, perhaps, the only way to win a level. But remember. It costs you 2 lives and it does not reset the time.
  • Remember, on any level, the game ends instantly should the time get down to zero. So, use the hour glass button to extend the game.
